M3GAN 2.0 is the forthcoming American science fiction horror film, directed by Gerard Johnstone and has been penned down by Akela Cooper. This is the sequel to the film M3GAN (2022), which will once more be choreographed by Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, and involving Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari and Jemaine Clement. Jason Blum and James Wan return as producers under their respective Bloomhouse Productions and Atomic Monster companies aside from Divide/Conquer.

After the recent announcement that the MCU (this means the M3GAN Cinematic Universe, of course) will expand due to the release of 90s sexy AI thriller SOULM8TE, the killer robotic doll franchise’s own sacred timeline is also gaining a head of steam as production on M3GAN 2.0 has commenced. A video clip featuring the animatronic skull of M3GAN posted by Jason Blum on X, formerly known as Twitter, provided the shooting news. Moreover, according to Deadline, the horror film — which once had a tentative January 2025, release date — has now been moved to 27 June, 2025. And that’s not the only fresh twist one can find with the synthetic slasher’s sequel now.

As reported by The New York Times in November 2022, Universal Pictures was happy with such box office performance of M3GAN and indeed intended to produce another film. Gerard Johnstone has many An M3GAN sequel plans have all been abandoned. James Wan made the reasons clear stating ‘he had an “idea of where these sequels wo.”’. A few weeks later, Universal confirmed a release date and that the title would be M3GAN 2.0. Writing the script was Kela Cooper while rejoining James and directing the film Johnstone.
Allison Williams and Violet McGraw reprises her former roles as Gemma and Cady respectively. They were however joined in the supporting cast by Jenna Davis, Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps reprising their roles from the prior film while new characters were played by Ivanna Sakhno, Timm Sharp, Aristotle Athari and Jemaine Clement. The filming in New Zealand started on July 16“, 2024.
As Deadline confirmed, Timm Sharp (Percy Jackson And The Olympians), Aristotle Athari (Silicon Valley), and Jemaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords, Moana) are fresh recruits for more stab-happy AI killfests. A number of them are known cast returnees Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, and Jenna Davis, series newcomer Ivanna Sakhno of Ahsoka fame, and Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps, who as techies Cole and Tess have been revealed to return with the new casting announcements. As is the case with the film’s storyline, the specifics regarding the new cohort’s characters, for the time being, stay locked up, however we do at the very least know who is doing what on M3GAN 2.0 – Gerard Johnstone and Akela Cooper are back to write and direct respectively.
As fans of the first film will recall, M3GAN’s wild climax saw roboticist Gemma (Williams) and her niece Cady (McGraw) rip the titular evil botanical emotional support robot, apart with its inner machinery and stab it in its processor. Yet in the very last frame there was an image which teased that M3GAN was somehow still alive in the security system, which gave a new opportunity for juicy dancing doll to be revived.
